Shed Your Hometown Colors
You can’t be a fan when you’re placing a wager. If you are, then you’re sure to miss opportunities that may call for you to wager against your favorite teams – heaven forbid.
If you’re playing to win and serious about making money, then you must abandon your allegiances to your favorite teams. You have to put your money to work for you on the strongest plays and sometimes that means wagering against your favorite teams. If you want to win – this is the discipline. Follow the value and forget about the names on jerseys.
The same advice can be said if you only wager on your favorite teams. This strategy could prove very risky for several reasons. First, if you are going to take a game just because it’s your favorite team, regardless of who they’re playing or the odds that you are getting, then you are just betting on success and not making smart and informed plays. Winners are picked and judged based upon a lot of factors – matchups, venue, injuries, trends etc. – if you are not taking to time to look at some of these other factors and just picking your hometown team all the time, your chances at long-term success will be greatly reduced.
Second, if you are only using one local sportsbook to get your lines, and this sportsbook becomes familiar with your wagering pattern – always taking your favorite team – you could be getting a bad line. Local sportsbooks have been known to take advantage of their players that favor the local home teams and will skew the odds against these teams to try to squeeze every little advantage out of the game. The thinking is that if players are willing to take these teams all the time, they are going to take them at almost any price. This is yet another reason why it’s always a good idea to ‘shop’ lines from multiple sportsbooks to get the best odds for your game before making your wagers.
So do what the professional bettors do and avoid these types of situations by shedding your hometown colors. You’ll be happy you did and better off in the long run.
Best of luck,
