Dealing with New Faces in the Starting Rotation
At the beginning and end of every baseball season we see more and more new faces on teams’ rosters. With injuries, trades and call-ups the rotation may see a lot of new faces by year’s end. The question is – how to evaluate and analyze these games with new pitchers?
At PSP we try to stay away from these games if we don’t have a solid read on these new hurlers. Generally, we like to wait at least 3 starts before we evaluate new pitchers to see how they perform with their new major league clubs. Three starts gives the pitcher a chance to eat some innings and allows us the opportunity to assess them in different situations.
If you can’t wait and need to place action on games with new starters, try to look at their past performances and minor league records. Also, you should take into account the rest of the team’s staff and try to rank this new pitcher somewhere (skill wise) in the rotation. Compare similarly skilled pitchers on the team and try to estimate this new pitcher’s performance. But like we said before, it’s probably best to wait a few starts to see how the pitcher adjusts to his new setting and major league hitters.
Best of luck,
